Overview:-
District Library, Barpeta was established in 1970 under the Directorate of Library Services, Government of Assam. Since its inception, the library has been serving the educational, informational, and cultural needs of the people of Barpeta town as well as the surrounding areas. Over the years, it has become an important centre of knowledge and learning for students, teachers, researchers, and the general public.
The library is conveniently located near M.C. College, Barpeta, one of the premier educational institutions in the district. A large number of college students regularly visit the library to access books, newspapers, journals, and other study materials. Besides students, competitive examination aspirants, researchers, and readers from different walks of life also benefit from the services provided by the library.

The library has a rich collection of approximately 70,000 apx. Books (English, Assamese, Hindi, Bengali) covering various subjects such as literature, science, history, social science, religion, biographies, competitive examinations, and general knowledge. It also subscribes to 8–10 local and national daily newspapers and 10–15 magazines and journals related to education, health, current affairs, science, entertainment, and other fields.
To meet the growing demand for digital resources, the library provides e-book facilities to its bona fide members. Members can access the digital collection by obtaining a unique User ID and Password from the library.
The library remains open from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. on all working days. It remains closed on Mondays (weekly holiday), 2nd and 4th Sundays of every month, and all State Government holidays. The library remains open on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays, providing greater convenience to readers.
With its vast collection, dedicated services, and commitment to promoting reading habits and lifelong learning, District Library, Barpeta continues to play a significant role in supporting education, knowledge dissemination, and community development in the district.
Duties and responsibilities:
The library staffs are responsible for providing efficient and reader-friendly library services, including the acquisition, accessioning, classification, cataloguing, shelving, and circulation of books and other reading materials. They assist readers in locating information, maintain the reading room and various library sections, manage membership records, and ensure the proper preservation and upkeep of library resources. The staffs also organize library activities, maintain digital and e-library services, prepare official records and reports, subscribe to newspapers and periodicals, and promote reading habits while ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all users.
