Overview of Sericulture Department

An Overview of the Department:-

Directorate of Sericulture under the Administrative control of Handloom Textile and Sericulture Department , Govt. of Assam was established in the year 1958 with a different nomenclature as Directorate of Weaving and Sericulture , Assam till July , 1983 . In June 1984 , the house was further divided and the Directorate of Sericulture and weaving was born of the latter.

Since separation of the Directorate of Sericulture, it has been performing as a nodal Department for all activities relating to silk and silk production in the state . The head quarter of the Directorate of Sericulture , Assam is located at Reshom Nagar , Khanapara, Guwahati just in 5 k.m distance from the capital of Assam , Dispur. The Directorate is headed by a Senior State Govt. Officer borne from the the Assam Civil Service Senior Grade . To control the entire Sericulture mechanisms in the state , the Govt. of Assam has created 4 nos of Additional Director offices at a) BTC Kokrajhar B) Diphu C) Dima Hasao D) At Head Quarter.  1 (One) Research Institute at Dhakuakhana , Lakhimpur , 2 (two) Technological information Centre at Gogamukh and Jonai , Dhemaji. Twenty Six (26) nos District Offices , Twenty Eight (28 )nos sub-divisional offices , 342 nos Farms / Centres , 3 nos cocoon banks , 6 Nos Muga Seed Development Project etc. Moreover, one (1 ) no Sericulture Training Institute has been set up at Titabar , Jorhat District to impart Training as Sericulture as a purely technical agro-based rural cottage industry and its play a vital role for up liftment of rural economy .

The office of the Assistant Director of Sericulture , Barpeta was established in the year of 1984. At that time the office was functioning in a rented house . In the year of 2019, the office was sifted to own new building located at Sonkushi ( B.H.Road ) Near New Bus Stand ,Barpeta. The Barpeta District Plays an important role for production of silk, specially in Muga and Eri.

In Barpeta, there are 4106 nos family engaged in Eri culture and 420 nos families engaged in Muga culture and 91 nos families engaged in Mulberry culture covering 142.8 hectare Eri plantation, Muga 20.8 Hectare and Mulberry 13.6 hectare respectively covering 79 nos of villages.

In Govt. Sector , there are 1 (one) no full fledged farm located at Howly and 2 (two) nos. centres which are located at Noontola, Sorbhog. The details of the Govt. Farms are given bellow in the following table.

The object of the establishment of the above Govt. Seri Farm , Howly is to produce Mulberry DFLs by conducting mulberry rearing mainly two crops Spring and Autumn and also conduct Muga Rearing in Govt. Sector and produce Muga DFLs.

Muga rearing by the Pvt. Rearing in Govt. V.G.R, Noontola and collect 10% revenue against their production.

In Collective Mulberry Garden( C.M.G)conduct Mulberry Rearing and produce Mulberry cocoon and Pvt. Farmers also utilized mulberry ( Nuni) leaves for their rearing.
